From July 4 to 25, 2026, Avignon highlighted the Korean language through theater and live performance for this new edition of the festival.
The director of the Avignon Festival, Tiago Rodrigues, reported on Tuesday July 21“a very positive outcome” for the 2026 edition, “at the artistic level and public participation”four days before its closing.
“Today, this Tuesday July 21, we sold 119,000 tickets (out of 136,000 places on sale), he told AFP. This is slightly up compared to the quantity of places sold on the same day last year.”
According to him, it is not possible at this stage to give a reliable attendance rate, as the end-of-festival gauges are higher than those of last year.
After Arabic in 2025, Spanish in 2024 and English in 2023, the Korean language was in the spotlight this year with 20% of the programming reserved for the performing arts of this country: popular theater, documentary theater, visual performances, dance and circus, pansori (Korean art of sung storytelling).
This international event, which started on July 4 and which offered 47 shows in the “in”, presented, according to its director, “key shows” as Maldoror by Julien Gosselin, opening piece performed in the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais des Papes.
Tiago Rodrigues also promised “an extraordinary program” in 2027 for the 80th anniversary of the festival created in 1947 by Jean Vilar, wishing to keep it secret and not reveal anything before April, neither of the opening show nor of the guest language.
