Not all teen series produce seven seasons, but Riverdale yes he got it. It turned actors like KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Charles Melton into youth stars and, between 2017 and 2023, it aired 137 episodes. But the news that its audience may not have expected is that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of the series, is already working on a new adaptation of the same characters… but with zombies.

To understand this project, you first have to understand the history of the comic Archiethe source of inspiration for Riverdalein the United States. It began as a teen comic, centered on the love triangle formed by Archie, Veronica and Betty, which showed an idealized american way of life in times of war: in 1941, the year of its first publication, the Second World War was underway. But, as the issues and decades passed, this comic evolved.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who in addition to being a screenwriter is a comic book writer, was responsible for updating the character with 10 special issues called Afterlife with Archie in 2013. In it, Reggie kills Jughead’s dog and, at Jughead’s request, Sabrina resurrects his pet. The only problem? That the dog becomes a zombie and begins to infect the inhabitants of Riverdale, unleashing a possible apocalypse of the living dead.

Now, after having written Riverdale For seven seasons, Aguirre-Sacasa is willing to revive the same characters on television but with a new cast and clearly framing the series in a new genre. “The only thing more dangerous than the walking dead is trying to survive adolescence,” they say from Disney+, the platform that will produce the first season.

Aguirre-Sacasa also wrote a horror comic and the Netflix adaptation centered on Sabrina Spellman, which should appear in this 'Afterlife with Archie'.

Those responsible clearly know this fictional universe: Aguirre-Sacasa also signed Chilling Adventures of Sabrinaboth the adaptation of the comic and the Netflix series (and remember that Sabrina is a character from the Archie universe), and will have Greg Berlanti as executive producer, who was also behind the adaptations of Riverdale and Sabrina.

“This is the comic that started it all. Before it existed Riverdalebefore Chilling Adventures of Sabrinawas Afterlife with Archiewith which I collaborated with the best horror artist in the industry, Francesco Francavilla,” Aguirre-Sacasa wanted to remember, who warned that perhaps it was time to “say a prayer for Archie, Betty, Veronica and the whole gang because… the zombies are coming!!!”

The interesting thing about the project, however, will be to see how the audience digests that these same characters are adapted again on television just four years after the end of the series, with other faces. And will Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti be able to recover the original actors of the series for other characters or cameos?
