The American president claims that declassified documents show that Beijing hacked electoral data before the 2020 presidential election. Experts and several official investigations, however, dispute his assertions.
Accusations already made, but never demonstrated. Donald Trump once again affirmed, Thursday July 16, that the 2020 presidential election had been “volley”accusing China and Venezuela of trying to distort the vote, without providing new evidence. During a speech at the White House, devoted to the integrity of the elections, the American president assured that China had carried out “the biggest hack of electoral data in history” by seizing 220 million American voter files. He also suggested that Venezuela could have manipulated voting machines used in the United States.
The White House immediately announced the declassification of documents from the intelligence services, which Donald Trump presents as confirmation of his accusations.
These claims, however, have been repeatedly rejected. More than 60 legal challenges filed after the 2020 election have uncovered no fraud likely to have changed the outcome of the vote won by Joe Biden. A report by US intelligence agencies released in 2021 also concluded that no foreign actor attempted to tamper with the voting process. The documents declassified Thursday also do not demonstrate manipulation of the 2020 ballot, according to several experts interviewed by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
