The adaptation of The map of desires by Alice Kellen two decades ago it would have been a film produced for cinemas, even without pretensions to quality as was the case at the time with most adaptations of novels by Nicholas Sparks. In these times, however, it only had two options: be a movie for streaming or, as it ended up happening, be a series.
The structure of the story suited the format. Greta (Alícia Falcó) was conceived to save her cancer-stricken sister with her stem cells. This allowed Greta and Lucy (Georgina Amorós) to grow up together but, in their twenties, the eldest died. What is the meaning of life when you fail in the goal for which you were literally born?
Months after the death, a boy named Will (Pablo Álvarez) contacts Greta: Lucy created a game for him called “the map of desires” designed to regain the will to live.
The different tests and clues offer screenwriter Isa Sánchez (The Gardener) a structure on which to tell a story of love, grief and guilt. It is a chewy, maudlin miniseries, obvious in its intentions, with the ghostly presence of the sister included, probably designed for those who are not scared by this description. Will it at least serve to complete the meteoric rise of Alícia Falcó after Eighteen, The Atomic Shelter and That Night?
