Dream high about Spain in the World Cup

Whatever the result of the Spain-Argentina match would have been and which of the two would have won the Cup, (it is always better to add another star to the shirt) the players of the Spanish soccer team had already fulfilled their mission before starting the match. They had won the hearts of the Spanish people, of millions of citizens of the world, and of many North Americans. All those Americans who have vibrated with Spain’s game will have wondered why their president, Donald Trump, says that Spain “is a lost cause”, why he assures that he wants nothing to do with Spain, and why he considers that “they are (we are) bad people.”

What will remain in the retina of the hundreds of thousands of citizens from all over the world who watched the World Cup is that Spain knows how to play as a team, that it is humble and that instead of talking, it acts, that good work prevails, and that it does not change for the sake of it, but because it knows what it wants and where it is going. That sometimes he wins and other times he loses. That sometimes he achieves his goal and other times he doesn’t, but that he never, ever stops trying, and that is why he does not disappoint.

The image of Spain has risen points in the world and perhaps many do not know that there is another Spain that emerges when we are doing better. A Spain that has undesirable political behavior, political statements that cannot stand the newspaper archive, judges that are applauded by some, when they act to the detriment of the opposite, and criticized by others when the person they are directed against is against them. Judges who make mistakes, consciously or unconsciously, but not because lawfare because otherwise the higher authorities would correct their decisions, and the Council of the Judiciary would sanction them, which at times it has done.

Although the European justice system admits that the Amnesty law does not go against community law, (it has not ruled on Spanish law because it does not correspond to it, it is the exclusive matter of the Spanish Constitutional Court), it has said where we failed: in the fight against corruption, and the Government and opposition should take good note of these warnings, because the cases of corruption that have occurred, those that are being investigated and those to come, are those that undermine confidence in the democratic system, and the response to all these cases will be what allows us to continue being one of the most advanced democracies in the world, and we have done so in 50 years. It will not be if the response is to see everything as an attempt to overthrow the Government or to prevent the opposition from coming to power.

If we know how to do it, why do we insist on looking for the things on which we disagree instead of the things that unite us and make us stronger? It is not about forgetting with the World Cup what Judge Peinado or Puigdemont have done. About these two cases, a note. Regarding the first, I wonder if any of those who will judge Begoña Gómez will raise the moral doubt of whether it is an opportunity to apply the divine justice that they believe should fall on Pedro Sánchez, or if there are those who will want to save their leader, their president, leaving aside, in both cases, the slightest objectivity with which a member of a jury must declare “proven or not proven the justiciable fact” and the “guilt or inculpability of each accused.”

Regarding Puigdemont, tell him that when he returns to Spain, when the Spanish courts determine that the crimes he is accused of are forgiven, he will no longer be the self-exiled hero, who while he was had a role, but again in Catalonia, what will it be? Tell him that the ruling of the European Court is not a triumph of the independence movement, but of the Spanish rule of law that they wanted to subvert. Has the amnesty been worth it? Of course, it did not serve to unite, but rather to divide the Spaniards even more, although this week they all dreamed together of winning a World Cup again.
